About the Author

Andria Lisle is programming curator at Fourth Bluff in downtown Memphis, a new project that is part of the national initiative, Reimagining the Civic Commons. Her specialty is curating experiences of social practice, political action, artistic intervention, and institutional critique. A former music journalist, Lisle hosts a hip-hop program on WEVL in Memphis. She is co-author of Sewing School and Sewing School 2.

Amie Petronis Plumley is an elementary school teacher at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School in Memphis, Tennessee, where she inspires students to sew in the classroom, in an after-school sewing club, and at a wildly popular summer sewing camp. She is co-author of Sewing School and Sewing School 2, and the mother of two children.

Young sewers of both genders will enjoy this engaging trip into the rewarding and fun world of machine sewing. All that is required is some prior knowledge and experience with hand sewing. This reviewer has not read the authors' previous book on hand sewing, Sewing School: 21 Sewing Projects Kids Will Love to Make. The first third of the book is dedicated to getting ready to sew: how to buy and set up the sewing machine, required sewing tools and fabric, how to read and use patterns, and mastering basic machine sewing techniques. The remainder presents detailed instructions for about twenty attractive projects of varying difficulty, clearly rated to measure the skill level required for each project. Attractive insets for project materials and technique tips enhance the project instruction. Valuable step-by-step photos accompany each written instruction. The physical attributes of the book make it very easy to use as a project guide. The sturdy workbook style with concealed wire binding will easily remain open on the sewing machine. It includes an in-book ruler and reusable pattern pieces in a handy in-book envelope. The authors recognize that machine sewing requires adult supervision. They include an introduction for adults about how to buy a sewing machine, what materials the young sewer will need, and how to handle the frustration that is inevitable. Each project has an inset titled "A Note for Grown-Ups," and the book concludes with a section for adults who may want to teach sewing to a group of children. Gr 3–8—A sequel to Sewing School (Storey, 2010), which focused on hand stitching, this visually appealing title carries those skills over to machine sewing. It covers the basics: machine and fabric anatomy and selection, supplies needed, project preparation, and safety practices. Readers are guided step-by-step in the creation of 20 projects, with patterns enclosed in a pocket at the back. The projects have been tested by children within the book's targeted age range; are logically arranged, garnering more stars as their complexity increases; and draw on skill sets that have been previously covered. Clear, high-quality photographs and concise directions coincide with each step, while sidebars contain ideas for personalizing projects with embellishments. One chapter is devoted to correcting mistakes; hand-stitching skills needed in finishing up are contained in another. Information on creating a sewing group and a useful resource guide are included. Highlighting the many benefits acquired through learning to sew, this volume will serve adults as well as children. As a beginner's guide, it is first-rate and even encourages readers to expand their repertoire with the inclusion of more challenging techniques such as patchwork, drawstrings, and zippers. This sequel to Sewing School focuses on teaching children and preteens how to use a sewing machine to create fun and quirky projects. The kid-friendly ideas included here are easy to cut and sew, making them virtually frustration proof, and the samples pictured use colorful and whimsical fabrics that will attract children. Each project lists step-by-step instructions complemented by photographs that clearly depict how each step should look. Additionally, there are plenty of images of children sewing (mostly girls, though there are a few boys mixed in), along with advice from young sewists. VERDICT While children are the target audience, adult beginners may appreciate the pleasant tone and accessible projects. Grown-ups will find as well many useful tips for helping young people who are interested in sewing.
