The Chains of St. Peter
A fictional story taken from Acts 12 in the Holy Bible. King Herod captured and beheaded James the Just and seeing the acceptance and excitement of the Israelites King Herod decides to arrest Peter the known leader of Christs Apostles. Titus Mena a friend of Peter has been baptized by John is well known among the Christians finally lands a job in Herods dungeon. One night Titus comes bounding up the stairs from the fifth level and suddenly stops dead in his tracks. He sees Peter the Apostle stand and put on his Mantle and his slippers. Wanting to shout to Peter but realizing he dare not watches as Peter dons his slippers and his cloak and walks out the three gates the guards unaware of what is happening. Titus knows the Christians will be prosecuted when Herod learns of Peters escape and he is stunned not knowing what to do for he is a Christian. Unaware he is putting himself in peril he must do something. He gathers the chains running out the cattle gate of Jerusalem, as he leaves he grabs a gunny sack which he uses to wrap the chains in. He knows he must protect them at all costs but he also knows if he dares go to his own home Herod will slay his entire family. He finds a cave he knew of as a child and hides there. Using the chains as a pillow he tries to sleep tossing and turning until fatique takes over and sleep creeps into his body. Dreaming he sees his dear mother who tell him to take the chains to Byzantium to the headquarters of the Church and the Archbishop of Byzantium. When he wakes he meets Shafeet who is also a Christian and after a time Titus confides in him and they decide that will be thier mission. Now along with their two horses Hero & Magic they begin the journey which will be wrought with many pitfalls as thieves and Herod attempts to steal the chains for if one owns a horse they surely are wealthy. The many twists and turns of Titus' story will confuse and exite the reader and so the oddessey begins.
