In this collection of stories, it is hoped that "Once upon a time…" and "Happily Ever After" favor the smart, creative princesses instead of the ones only hoping for a handsome prince. Unfortunately, in these stories, only Princess Greta's tale truly shows creativity to solve the problem of the dragon. The book's opening tale shows how Princess Grace's clumsiness becomes very useful in a knight's tournament. Princess Jane's story allows her to realize that her modern kingdom may not be as bad as she thinks, in spite of her parents and castle being less than a fairy tale. Princess Wendy learns much about sports from a clever frog, and Sleepy Beauty wakes up to entertain a resourceful gardener. Lastly, Princess Rose places a want ad for a prince and stumbles upon one. These stories have some humor and witty illustrations, but the different fonts used throughout the stories are very distracting. More disappointing is the realization that only one of these princesses uses her brain to better herself. Some early elementary girls may find these stories amusing, but one hopes that they can have even more attitude than most of these princesses. Reviewer: Elizabeth Fronk

These slightly sassy stories feature troubled princesses, unusual kingdoms, and magical circumstances. Depicting the woeful lives of six fair royal ladies, each selection leads to the princess's happy ending, albeit through a unique series of events. Selections star Princess Grace, whose clumsiness causes her to lose her clothes, Princess Jane, who trades high royalty for her family's minivan, and Princess Rose, who searches for her own Prince Charming with a little help from a want ad. These quirky, independent heroines battle dragons and endure odds to conventional conclusions, and children familiar with classic fairy tales will enjoy revisiting characters such as the Frog Prince, Sleeping Beauty, and the Three Bears. A candyfloss collection of six fairy tales, whose punning titles may echo more familiar stories but whose texts have another agenda. Princess Grace in "The Clumsy Princess" is only thus on the ground; on horseback she wins the joust she was supposed to judge. "Sleepy Beauty," who nods off at any opportunity, breaks her own spell by kissing the gardener. In "Double Dragons," Princess Greta finds a way to keep the dragon occupied in ways that do not involve scorching the flowers or eating the lambs. Although three illustrators contribute to the whole, all the brightly colored, rubbery images share a pink-and-green–infused palette and a squiggly nature. The text has its own amusements, even unto fontplay, as the names of princesses, various nouns and other items are picked out in antique, ornate or just plain LOUD type. First published in Britain, this mildly amusing compendium may find its audience, but doesn't have much in the way of attitude, really. (Fractured fairy tales. 5-9)
