About the Author

Frederich H. Heider, lyricist, and Carl Kress, jazz guitarist, together created the song "There's a Train Out for Dreamland" that was immortalized on the classic album Nat "King" Cole: 1947 Vol. 2.

Jane Dyer is the illustrator of the New York Times bestselling Cookies series by Amy Krouse Rosenthal as well as numerous other award-winning picture books. She lives and works in a hundred-year-old brick house in Northampton, Massachusetts. You can visit Jane online at www.janedyerbooks.com.

For parents who have established a bedtime routine that includes singing, this is a lovely addition to the repertoire of possibilities. Lyrics to the song unfold and sweep across each double-page spread and the softly hued illustrations depict the individual lines of the song, from the jelly bean giraffe to the candy-laden mountain. Children in their jammies line up to get on board and sing their way through the magical landscape of sweets and confections. At the back of the book are the music and lyrics for this tune, first made popular in the late 1940s by Nat King Cole. If you are unfamiliar with the tune, as I was, I do not recommend you first tackle it in the dark of a child's bedroom, as the notes and lyrics are too small to read in that setting, but just read it as a poem. There are a lot of postings on the Internet that feature Nat King Cole's voice to help you out. What a lovely way to end a day. Reviewer: Maggie Chase

Polar bears sell ice cream at the stations where the train stops "to pick up crackerjack mail." Noise words stand out in bold. Back matter includes the complete score with the lyrics. The words to a Nat King Cole song from the 1940s serve as the text for this bedtime story featuring the roly-poly animals and charming children in soft-focus watercolors that are the signature look of Jane Dyer's illustrations. For this effort, her daughter Brooke is the co-illustrator. As the story begins, a big blue train pulls in with bells ringing and whistle blowing. The train transports a smiling, singing crowd of cute children to Dreamland, riding on peppermint-striped rails to a station that serves up ice cream and then around a candy-coated mountain and up into the sky. The story concludes with a blond toddler, also shown on the front cover, climbing into bed with the magical train floating through the sky outside the window. The words from the song are not well-known today, but they function adequately as a structure for this wispy, dreamy interpretation. The pleasant illustrations have a slightly washed-out look, and everything seems a bit hazy and subdued, but that might be just right to coax a little one into dreamland. (Picture book. 2-5)
