This collection of 54 brief, mostly free verse poems deal with a variety of social issues relevant to today's adolescents; such as: falling in love, friendship, peer pressure, gangs, violence, family relationships etc. Inspired by the problems and interests of her own daughters, the poems seem to speak from the perspective of young people in transition, as they face coming of age situations and emotions. These poems might inspire kids to write their own poems about the journey to adulthood.

Holbrook's energetic collection of fifty-three poems highlights the inherent contradictions of being a teen. The title poem describes a typical teen's friendships: "Some friends knock your confidence/Real friends form a net." Other poems describing the push-pull of adolescence include such topics as the transition to adulthood: On the Verge, Evolution; dangerous fun: Meant for Fun; and mood swings: A Real Case. Holbrook also addresses the tough issues: car accidents: Finals, The Gun, The Runaway, and gangs: Blown Away. One of the most thoughtful poems, My Plan, relates a teen's intense pressure to have perfect looks, and the extremes teens will consider reasonable in their quest for acceptance. "As soon as I can/I'm going to buy a new nose...Send my skin out for repair/tune up this Minnie Mouse voice/and then I may/have a couple inches added here...I want a body by design." While there are no new insights here, Holbrook's poems have universal appeal and readers who discover her book will find themselves within its pages. This slim volume with its bright purple border and center photo of someone's sneakers walking a tightrope makes an attractive pleasure read, as well as a source for students looking for an accessible poem for assignments. The poems would also serve well as discussion-starters for healthy living classes. Recommended for junior high, high school, and public libraries serving teens.
