In the 1880s upon an order of Sultan Abdlhamid II, Mecca and Medina, the two sanctuaries of Islam, were photographed and catalogued, together with thousands of other frames that portrayed the Ottoman lands. There are over 80 photographs in the album showing us what these blessed cities looked like in the 19th century and what they have lost over the course of time.

About the Author

Mehmet Bahadir Dorduncu studied history at Ataturk University, Erzurum. He worked as a history teacher at various secondary schools and undertook administrative positions. Much of his writing and articles have been published in Turkish magazines. He is currently a staff writer and editor for Kaynak Publishing Group in Istanbul. His special area of interest and expertise is the development of photography during the Ottoman period. He is presently working on compiling the best samples of photography catalogued by the Ottomans that portray how the people and the cities were at the time.
