Description: This is an edited volume on applications of information management technologies in a series written for nurse administrators.
Purpose: The series objective is to focus on current and emerging issues of interest in nursing administration. Chapters include the basics of e-mail and Internet browsers as well as applications of information technology in practice.
Audience: This volume is appropriate for anyone interested in applying information systems. It specifically targets nurse administrators and faculty teaching in nursing administration programs. It is particularly useful for nurse administrators interested in different ways of applying information systems to quality assurance and evaluation, communications, and performance evaluation.
Features: Readers do not need to be familiar with informatics or the Internet. This book focuses conceptually on the advantages and applications of information systems as an improvement tool. It is divided into three sections: visions; strategies; and innovations. The chapter order would be improved if chapters focusing on basic principles such as electronic communication or information systems were first. The range of topics is the book's strength. Each chapter speaks to specific applications of information technology. Web addresses of the projects, and tables of online discussion groups are included so the reader has immediate access. A weakness is the absence of a chapter on security of data and information systems. This is especially relevant since data transfer in integrated health systems and communication of patient and staff information over the Internet are ever-increasing.
Assessment: The explosion of information in information management systems and technology is greater than one volume can cover. The practices that are sampled in this text are helpful for innovative administrators who can learn from others and apply the technology to meet their own needs.
