Overview

Variety can open up brave new worlds. Tenor saxophonist David S. Ware's music, with its near-relentless, full-charge attack, is generally restless and volatile, at times, even anxiety provoking. Here, though, simple vamps ("Mikuro's Blues"), intricate stop-start heads ("Lexicon", "Logistic", "Quadrahex") and even a pop ballad ("The Way We Were") are used by the leader and longtime quartet members pianist Matthew Shipp and bassist William Parker to launch compelling improvisations whose abruptly shifting passages run the gamut from stately and melodic to introspective and expressionistic. Ware, aided by Susie Ibarra's deft, focused drumming, leads the group through one remarkable transition after another. Everyone shows great range, with Shipp and Ware in particular looking beyond their trademark brooding, implosive styles.
