Going To See Grassy Ella

This book, originally published in 1993, is a fast-paced comic adventure narrated by 14-year-old Annie West, whose 12-year-old sister, Peej, has cancer. Peej wants to go to New York to see a faith healer named Graciella, who cures people out of the goodness of her heart. Reluctantly, Annie agrees to go with her on a weekend when their parents will be out of town. The ensuing adventures include a wild chase through the tunnels of Grand Central Station, a baseball game, a mistaken-identity kidnapping, and end with the girls (and “Grassy Ella”) helping the police to catch a ring of drug criminals. Peej, who is the hero of the story, finds a path to healing with her doctors’ help and Graciella’s advice. Going to See Grassy Ella was named "Recommended Book for Reluctant Young Readers 1994" by the Young Adult Library Services Association of the ALA.
