Many cultures have stories of rags-to-riches transformations that are results of true love and escaping hard circumstances. Cinderella has endured so many variations that it may seem impossible for it to be told in a fresh way. Resist your skepticism, and pick up this book. Here, Cinderella is a strong-minded preschooler. She is not given a load of chores; she takes on the task of cleaning because she enjoys the idea of it (as many young children do)—and makes a huge mess in the process (also, as many young children do). Her “Ugly Sisters” are headed to a party, and they have arranged for the “Fairy Godmother” to babysit. When Cinderella becomes very upset, her babysitter distracts her with a snack and cleaning up the mess, then decides they can go to the party, too. After trying on a dozen outfits, the stubborn “Very Little Cinderella” settles on her “blue dress…stripey hat…froggy coat…and lello boots!” Instead of a coach made from a pumpkin and horses turned from rats, this Cinderella wants to take her big blue scooter to the party. There, she dances until the stroke of midnight compels her babysitter to take her home. Unfortunately, one of her “lello boots” gets lost in the fray. The next day, although the Ugly Sisters and Fairy Godmother try to cheer up the small girl, she is sad about losing her “bestest boot.” Fortunately, another young partygoer—a “Very Little Prince”—has found it and arrives with his mother. The pair mix and match their cool boots and run off for to “play happily ever after.” There are a couple elements of this story that don’t fit. For example, it’s unclear why Cinderella’s guardians have decided to exclude her from the party, as the guests seem to range in age from young children through adults. In addition, it seems strange for the babysitter to make decisions that contradict the guardians’ arrangements. Young readers, however, are likely to enjoy this fairy tale retelling, in which a stubborn preschooler manages to get her way about everything. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green; Ages 4 to 8.

Heapy and Heap follow 2014’s Very Little Red Riding Hood by introducing a toddler version of Cinderella whose house-cleaning style is more Jackson Pollock than Martha Stewart. She is livid when the Ugly Sisters (who are actually quite sweet) go to a party without her: “It not fair!” she wails. “I not stay here! I want to go toooo!” Luckily, her Fairy Godmother/babysitter is on hand to “magic” Cinderella over to the party—Cinderella insists, firmly, on wearing her blue dress, “stripey” hat, froggy coat, and “lello boots,” one of which she leaves behind. Cinderella’s prince, a similarly minded boy, returns the lost boot, “and they both played happily ever after.” With splashy watercolor-and-ink illustrations and a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek tone, Heapy and Heap celebrate the spirit of willful toddlers. Cinderella as played by a very independent preschooler, housecleaning, Fairy Godmother (babysitter), missing yellow boot, and all. Very Little Cinderella is "cleaning" the house kid-style—as when kids clean and it's actually dirtier than when they started—when the Ugly Sisters tell her that she needs to clean up. "No!" she declares. "Cleaning all done. Now I have cookie." Just then, the Fairy Godmother appears, and the sisters tell Very Little Cinderella that they are off to a party. "I go too?" The Ugly Sisters escape just as Very Little Cinderella lets loose. Well, the Fairy Godmother tries to do her thing, but Very Little Cinderella has her own idea of what to wear and how to get to the party—just like a real preschooler. The day after, the crisis du jour is the missing yellow boot. Luckily, a Very Little Prince and his mommy save the day, making things even better with a playdate and a boot trade. In her watercolor-and-ink illustrations, Heap gets Very Little Cinderella's facial expressions and body language down to a T, from the hug she gives to her found yellow boot to her tantrum. Her resolute baby talk, on the other hand, is likely to polarize adult readers. Those going through their own independent phases—and their caregivers—may enjoy this take on a favorite fairy tale.
