Overview

Picking right up where 2016's moody and melodic Wild Vision left off, Dreaming Too Close to the Edge sees the Elephant Six alums expanding on the country-folk/Americana leanings of their previous outing with a ten-track set that's decidedly earthbound, but still manages to pay homage to their psych-pop past. The band's sixth full-length outing, the lineup is the same as Wild Vision, with founder (and sole original member) Ben Crum joined by drummer Kevin Shea, vocalist Suzanne Nienaber, keyboardist Joe McGinty, guitarist Kenny Wachtel, bassist David Lerner, multi-instrumentalist David Gould, and pedal steel player Phil Sterk. Hazy, ramshackle, and rootsy, Dreaming Too Close to the Edge is largely split between jangly, midtempo rockers ("Bury the Hatchet" and "Mixed Blood") and languid daytrippers ("Kingdom Come" and "Minor Blues"), with the overall vibe landing somewhere between Galaxie 500, Wilco, Elf Power, and Gram Parsons. The unfussy production pairs well with Crum and Nienaber's homespun, and sometimes incongruent harmonizing, and the playing echoes that looseness without ever feeling disconnected, especially on poppier numbers like the breezy, Grateful Dead-inspired "Time Served" and the fuzzy, open road opener "End of an Error."
