Speculative fiction is defined as encompassing works of fantasy, science fiction, and horror in this annotated readers' guide to literature for teens in the Genreflecting Advisory series. Using professional sources and her knowledge of teen reading interests, Fichtelberg selects approximately 1,400 titles from as many different sub-genres as possible written for an audience of grades 6-12, although there are a number of limited works included that are published for children and adult audiences. Bibliographic details and reading levels are provided for titles still in print that have been published in the last fifteen years. It is good to see books included such as Elizabeth Pope's Perilous Gard (Houghton Mifflin, 1974), reissued in 2001. The emphasis is on fantasy titles, but one will find a good representation of science fiction, ranging from classic works by H. G. Wells to "Media-Related Science Fiction Series," while one chapter is devoted to paranormal and horror titles. Interesting interviews with selected authors such as Lloyd Alexander, Holly Black, David Clement-Davies, Nancy Farmer, Patrice Kindl, Patricia McKillip, Kenneth Oppel, Elizabeth Wein, and Scott Westerfield provide insights on each author's writing and research. Extra resources include graphic novels, audiovisual formats, programming ideas, and author Web sites. It would have been useful, however, to add the criteria used to compile the "Best Books for Book Clubs" list. Indexes are provided for author, title, subject, and award-winning books in this highly useful, well-organized aid for collection development for all libraries with teen collections.

This useful guide should be in every YA collection. It encompasses 13 genres and subgenres included in the term "speculative fiction" and focuses on in-print titles published in the last 15 years. Each subgenre is clearly defined, and most of the 1400 titles are accompanied by a brief synopsis. Awards for each title are noted. At the end of each section, the author lists exemplary titles. The volume is well indexed, providing access by author, title, subject, and award. A bibliography and webliography point to additional resources. Other features include programming ideas, best titles for book clubs, and those available in A/V formats. Two useful reproducible lists are included: "Girl Power" and "Fine Fantasy for Harry Potter Fans." The author interview in each subgenre is a welcome addition. Writers such as Nancy Farmer, Lloyd Alexander, and Scott Westerfeld give readers insight into their reading and writing habits, their thoughts on the various genres and, occasionally, a great quote ("Kids' librarians are the coolest people in the world. I don't know why this is; it just is." Scott Westerfeld).
