CHAPTER 1
It was a beautiful, sunny day. The birds were chirping and the butterflies were dancing about.
There was a girl named Eleni who loved to swim. It was her favorite thing to do in the whole wide world. After she ate breakfast, she asked her mom, "Can I go into the pool?" Her mom said "Yes, of course" with a smile. Eleni was so excited she could not wait to jump in.
When she went into the pool, she put on her goggles and began to swim. What she saw next her eyes could not believe. Where am I? Eleni thought to herself. It appeared as though she was in a magical world under the sea. Eleni rubbed her eyes a few times and wondered if this was a dream.
She was so excited she started exploring right away. It did not take long before she saw this beautiful mermaid who had a fin of rainbow colors and long golden hair. Eleni introduced herself and asked the mermaid her name.
Her name was Helen, and she was very friendly and nice. Helen asked Eleni, "Would you like to join me and my merfriends on an adventure?" Eleni said, "Sure, I would love to." She took her to a hidden cave that only a special few knew about. Eleni was honored to be there and was so amazed by all the beautiful sparkly objects. They played dress-up with the special treasures Helen found in the deep blue sea and put on a fashion show. It was the best dress-up playdate she ever had. Before Eleni left, Helen gave her a friendship necklace made out of fresh pearls. Eleni said, "Thank you, this is amazing, I will treasure it forever."
Next she saw a purple talking octopus. His name was Bert, and he was an opera singer. He asked Eleni if she could sing. She said, "I sing with my mom all the time." Bert said, "I am about to sing in a show, would you like to sing with me?" Eleni was so excited to sing she did not have to think twice. They both made the most beautiful music together and enjoyed singing with an orchestra of fish, crab, and sea stars. Before she left, Bert gave her a great, big hug and invited her back to sing again someday.
Eleni started exploring again and ran into two sea horses, Jacob and Jaxson, playing with a seaweed cluster that was round like a ball. She approached them and asked, "Can I play with you guys?" They said, "Yes, happy to meet you, we would love to play with you." Eleni had a blast playing ball with her two new friends.
Eleni was eager to meet some more friends, so she went searching for a new adventure. She did not have to go very far, when she ran into a blue dolphin. She introduced herself, and the dolphin said, "Hi, my name is Constantine, want to play?" Eleni said, "Sure, I would love to play with you." He took her to the dolphin cove where she met his mother, Despina, who was the queen of the dolphins. It was so cool at the cove it was as though she was at the best water park in the world. Eleni and Constantine went down waterslides, rode water tubes, swung on water swings—it was a blast.
Eleni was so tired playing all day that she sat on a sea boulder to rest. A few feet away, she saw a whale shark crying. She thought to herself, Aw, I wonder why he is crying. At first, she was a little scared to ask what was wrong because it was so big, but she remembered reading in a book that this kind of shark ate a small plant called plankton and not meat.
Eleni swam to the whale shark and said, "Are you okay? Why are you crying?" The shark's name was George, and he said, "No one wants to be my friend or play with me." Eleni asked, "Why not?" George said, "They are all scared of me because I am the largest shark in the world, but I am gentle and would not hurt a fly." Eleni said, "I will play with you, I am not scared!" "Oh, goodie, goodie, goodie, I finally have a friend!" exclaimed George. "I am glad you can see the good in me!" The two of them swam in and out of the water caves and walked up and down the plank of a shipwrecked pirate ship. Eleni would even climb on George and dive off his back. It was so much fun! They played for so many hours that it was time for Eleni to go.
George was so sad to see Eleni go because she was his only friend and he had so much fun with her. Before she left, she told him that the least she could do for him was spread the word to the rest of the sea animals that he was a nice and gentle shark who wanted to have friends, fun, and be loved, just like the rest of them. George was quite grateful and gave Eleni a big hug, saying, "I now have a best friend, thank you."
