Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk

This retelling of the Greek myth of Jason and his quest for the Golden Fleece could serve as an introduction to Greek mythology. The story begins with Hera, the goddess of marriage, who decides to use Jason to destroy a disloyal king. As part of Hera's trickery, Jason asks for the king's throne in exchange for the Golden Fleece. Jason travels to distant lands searching for the Golden Fleece and discovers it on Colchis. The king of Colchis agrees to hand over the fleece if Jason can harness fire-breathing bulls without getting burned. Hera steps in to assist Jason by enchanting the king's daughter, Medea. She falls in love with Jason and gives him a spell to avoid being burned. Jason leaves with Medea and the Golden Fleece. He returns to his uncle and demands to be made king. The uncle refuses; Medea wants to be queen and she tells the king's daughters to kill their father. Jason thinks the throne is now his but the people are now frightened due to the king's death. The only pleased one in this drama is Hera on Mount Olympus. This myth has lots going for it: romance, a quest, revenge. However, the muddled illustrations may confuse younger readers and the extra details may annoy older ones. More information is given at the end of the story but it is unlikely that it can be seen due to the small font size and the crowding on the page where it appears. Reviewer: Elizabeth Fronk
