ABOUT THE BOOK
The series opens with a group of six young offenders (Nathan, Kelly, Curtis, Simon, Alisha, and Gary) sentenced to community service. Bored, jaded, and 100% unrepentant of their crimes, the group reluctantly suit up in their trademark orange jumpsuits and report to Tony, their probation worker. Not exactly a group of Boy Scouts, the offenders harass Tony and Gary shirks duty in the bathrooms.
A freak storm sends the rest of the group flying through the air, but at first they appear unharmed and unaffected. Kelly is the first to catch on that the storm wasn't the only freak event to occur when she "hears" her dog thinking. Simon discovers in the locker room that he has the power to turn invisible: not a far stretch as he is already the outcast of this group of outcasts and is alternatively ignored or harassed.
MEET THE AUTHOR
Laura Rensing is a writer and performer who occasionally has difficulty distinguishing fact from her pet fire-breathing dragon. A graduate of UC Irvine with dual degrees in Drama and Comparative Literature, Laura's experience onstage and on paper has given her a unique world view that allows her to move from present day politics to medieval literature at the drop of a pen. Don't let her frivolous tone fool you: her analysis of Public Sphere Theory in social media during the 2008 Presidential Election as well as her experience in local start-ups reveal that her critical thinking can be as daring as Lady Gaga's latest Grammy appearance.
EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK
Heartwarming and sometimes gag-inducing, Misfits is a daring dark comedy that pushes even super endurance past its limits. In spite of its crass humor, the series does pinpoint common insecurities among youths. From Alisha's over-sexed image to Nathan's perpetual childlike behavior to Simon's creepy outcast status to Curtis' "fallen angel" circumstances, the show examines motivations of these behaviors in the younger generation. At times revelling in the debauchery, at other times examining the pain of the circumstances, Misfits provides a unique look at the lives of your average superhero offender that has teleported its way into worldwide notice and acclaim.
