Simple shapes and bold black outlining distinguishes Santiago Cohen's cheery illustrations in the paper-over-board Noah & the Mighty Ark by Rhonda Gowler Greene, a rhyming retelling of the familiar Bible story for youngsters. Though the rhythm of some couplets falters, and a few of the lines may require further explanation, littlest readers will find here a fun introduction to the basic premise of Noah's steadfast faith. Greene offers a straightforward account of how Noah built an ark, gathered animals, and sailed safely over the flooded earth. This rhymed version scans well, which encourages reading aloud. Except for the dark backgrounds that make the words hard to see at times, the book is well designed. Variations in type size and spacing work well with the text and add emphasis to crucial words. Cohen's illustrations feature a gray-bearded patriarch and dozens of animal pairs that children will enjoy identifying. The impressionistic style suggests shapes through use of shading and flowing lines. Although this rendition lacks the majestic qualities of Jerry Pinkney's Noah's Ark (SeaStar, 2002) or the bright intensity of Lucy Cousins's Noah's Ark (Candlewick, 1993), it is definitely worth considering for collections that need a new or replacement version of Noah's story.
