Stickland compares and contrasts friendly cartoon bugs that feel a bit like two-dimensional, less developed versions of the characters in the film A Bug's Life. Single-word antonyms and phrases appear in playful, black font: on a hot pink spread, one pill bug ("hard bug") pushes another one that's rolled into a ball, opposite a "soft bug," a cross between a caterpillar and a slug. Some bugs "wriggle by day," and some "fly by night," but in the end they appear together in a dramatic pop-up. Energetic colors and bold, bright shapes should hit the spot for the preschool crowd. Ages 2?4. (Jan.)

At 10 ?" wide by 9 ?" tall this is a fairly large book for a small child to handle. That clearly makes it a floor book, 21" opened on the rug. The pictures of real and imaginary insects are large, but not threatening. The big 15" cherry red bug on the first page is looking down with friendly curiosity at a 2" blue bug on the lower right side of the page that seems similarly curious. While not at first obvious, the words of the book rhyme. Two bugs of equal size examine each other on a two-page spread entitled "Stripes and spots." These are followed by a "Hard bug" and a "soft bug," and on the next spread, "One bug," which is a single ladybug, and "lots," which turns out to be sixteen of them. This doggerel is followed by "Underground, above ground, Black and white, Wiggle by day, fly by night." The next-to-the-last double-page spread reveals a long line of colorful bugs of various sizes crawling above and below a green stick. "Bugs all sizes, short and tall, rainbow colored..."—turn the page to find a huge pop-up of bugs crowded onto a sunflower, "Look at us...all!" Children will love the hard bug that can roll itself into a circle and the yellow snail in a pink and red striped shell. Even the ants are attractive! Everyone can choose his or her favorite bug.
