About the Author

Caroline Adderson lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, with her husband, her dog and the son who lied to her when he said he would always be seven.

Mike currently works as an animation director at Corus Entertainment in Toronto, and has directed a number of award-winning children's shows. A show he worked on called Mike the Knight has won an international Emmy.

Jasper John Dooley turns everything into an adventure. This one begins with Molly the Dog at the public library. Kids are lining up to read to Molly but Jasper and his buddy, Ori, get there too late to participate. Instead, they observe that Molly, "a very grumpy dog," is not pleased with listening to stories about bulldozers and Cheeky the Squirrel. The boys set off to select books that Molly will enjoy when they return later in the week. Meanwhile, the idea of reading to a dog intrigues them, so they set up their own read-to-pets stand. Their sign: "Jasper and Ori will read to your Pets (Books They will LIKE!!!)." The turning point of this entertaining story is when Jasper accidentally drops his chosen book on toilet-paper-tube crafts into his nightly bath. That would be bad enough; but the situation grows dire when his father places the book into the oven to dry and then must put out the resulting fire with a fire extinguisher. This upsets Jasper, who obsesses about the stinky, charred remains that he hides in a trashcan in the alley. Labeling himself a "Book Killer," and convinced that the book will cost $2,500 to replace, the conscientious boy searches for ways to earn the needed money. He believes he cannot return to the library nor read to Molly until he returns with payment. As always, Jasper eventually arrives at a resolution to the jam he has gotten himself into and the story concludes with an amusing twist. Sketches throughout the text capture the humorous details and emotions of the story. Young readers will find this latest book as entertaining as others in the "Jasper John Dooley" series. Jasper John Dooley is a Book Killer. Could there be anything worse than that? Jasper checked out a fascinating library book all about toilet-paper-tube crafts. But it fell in the bathtub—and worse, his father tried to dry it in the oven, where it caught fire, and then, tragically, the fire extinguisher ended any hope of saving the poor book. There is little left except the stinking remains and the price to replace it, which Jasper—with his early-grade school wisdom—interprets to be an insurmountable $2,500. If he can't fix this, he'll never be able to go to the library to participate in the popular after-school program where children read to Molly the Dog. Although he tries hard to raise the money, he knows that, even with random tips and potential profits from an all-toast restaurant he and best friend Ori start, the situation is grim. It's only after delightful, matter-of-fact Ori cleverly observes the book price's decimal point and says, "The thing is, Jasper? That dot just saved your life," that things begin to look up. Adderson's simple, spot-on text and illustrator Shiell's frequent cartoonlike illustrations work perfectly to create an easy-to-read but ever-so-pertinent outing for emerging readers. Jasper's issues and plans are readily recognizable for the target audience, and good humor infuses all of it. Black-haired Jasper's sweetly diverse neighborhood charms.
