Rebel King - Book One - Hammer of the Scots
TWO MEN...
One, an old soldier and clever, commands Europe’s mightiest army. Already he has taken Wales and subjugated her once proud people. Now, Scotland comes to his grasp, her people all but conquered, her king deposed by his will. The "Hammer of the Scots", he needs to destroy but one family to complete his scheme.

The other, a wealthy young lord and newly wed, is scion of the prominent de Brus family. Trained in chivalric warfare but inexperienced as a battlefield commander, he is the one man in Scotland who may yet foil the old man’s aim. That places him in dire peril.

The old soldier has but one surviving son, spoiled and arrogant, whose passions have yet to be satisfied. One day, if he lives, he will inherit his father’s crown and all his kingdom. Will that domain include Scotland?

The young lord has a new wife, daughter of his antagonist’s most trusted general. Beautiful and strong willed, she has but one wish… to be her husband’s lady. But, she sacrifices her desires and takes up arms to follow him to war. At what price?

Four fearless brothers of the young lord willingly follow him into danger and hardship to attain an independent Scotland. Only one will survive.

A teenaged Scot, his father executed in London’s Tower for supporting William Wallace and his mother turned out of the family’s home, joins the “rebellious” Scots to have revenge. He will follow his lord to the death… and beyond.

The excessive earl, minion of the English king, sent to quash the Scots' "rebellion" by returning with the head of the "rebel king" in a box given for the purpose. His passions run to excess in all things, money, power, sex, drink, food, and cruelty.

Nephew to the young Scottish lord, he nevertheless finds himself on the side of the English where he has given his allegiance. Though his heart yearns to return to his own people, he must plot and war against them, having made his pact with the Devil.

The lord’s young squire, son of his good friend James the Stewart, answers the call of war though but a boy of twelve. When he is met with an armored knight intent on killing him, his youth is quickly ended.

A young woman, wife of an old earl, deserts her life of comfort and ease to join the “rebellion,” sacrificing her young life to the cause of her country’s freedom.

Two brothers, daring smugglers along the coasts and among the islands, find their place in the fight for Scottish independence, sailing into danger from nature as well as from the enemy for their king and country.

About the Author

Southern West Virginia native Charles Randolph Bruce was born and raised there in the highlands in which his Scottish ancestors settled in the late 1700s. His interest in telling the heroic story of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots 1306 -1329, was sparked by his family’s tradition that they descended from the great medieval warrior king.

Carolyn Hale Bruce was born in the Roanoke Valley, Virginia, where her 18th century ancestors include those with the Scottish surnames Agnew, Fraser, Thompson, and Davidson, among others. She wrote and had published two pictorial histories of her hometown.

The writers were panelists on the nationally distributed Book TV (C-span 2) hour and a half segment entitled “Successful Self-Publishing” at the Virginia Festival of the Book on March 29, 2008.

Now, having spent the last decade in researching, writing, illustrating, and promoting the Rebel King series of novels, Charles and Carolyn have traveled tens of thousands of miles to attend scores of games in dozens of states from Florida to Maine, Texas to Colorado, to promote their works and talk with other Scots about their hard-fought history. They have appeared on local television and radio shows in diverse markets, and have been written up in many newspapers and magazines. Every year new venues are added to their nearly nationwide wanderings.

Presently they are working on High King of Ireland, the fourth book in the epic saga of The Bruce, his “ragtag” army, and their attempts to free and maintain their homeland from enslavement by English king Edward I (a.k.a. “Longshanks” and “Hammer of the Scots”) and his son Edward II. The authors are also working at furthering their desires to create a documentary for airing on suitable cable television channels in the near future, and to put their novels on the big screen as several feature-length theatrical films, the last of which would be released on June 24th 2014, the 700th anniversary of the Scots’ victory over the far-greater army of Edward II at Bannockburn.
