Chapter One
So, later that Saturday morning, Melina, Dina, and Joe hopped on a plane and began their Egyptian excursion. Melina had only been on short flights before—never on one this long. She had a wonderful time on the plane. She ate all the food; she sang; and she played video games, watched TV, and even slept for a few hours. She sat in the seat closest to the window so she could look out and see from time to time. Mostly she saw clouds and the water of the Atlantic Ocean until they got close to Egypt. Then she saw all kinds of tiny people, cars, and little pyramids. Because they were so high in the air, everything on the ground looked like a toy.
She thought, So far, this is the best trip I have ever taken, and I'm not even in Egypt yet! Fifteen hours later, they landed in Cairo, the capital city of Egypt. It was eight o'clock in the morning. (Because Egypt is on the other side of the world from the United States, it is seven hours ahead of the place where Melina lived.) They met their limo driver and headed to the hotel. Cairo was very different from the United States. It was a very busy city with a lot of traffic and people everywhere. It was much, much louder that what Melina had expected. Car horns were blaring; street vendors were selling fruits; and people were talking and laughing everywhere she looked.
After they settled into the hotel and caught up on sleep (because of the time difference), all three woke up rested and ready to explore. After breakfast, their first stop was the Egyptian Antiquities Museum.
"Yahoo! I finally get to see the mummies. I get to see the mummies!" Melina sang as she trotted out of the hotel.
The museum was only a few steps away from where they were staying. They purchased their tickets, met with their tour group, and started exploring the museum.
As they wandered through rooms and rooms of artifacts, many of which were hundreds of years old, Melina became tired. Just when she thought she might like a nap, she felt a few taps on her shoulder.
"Excuse me, what's your name?" a young voice whined behind her.
Melina turned quickly to see who was there. "Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness. You're, you're, you're a ... a ..." Melina stuttered because this just couldn't be happening.
"A mummy?" suggested the young voice. Maybe it was happening after all.
"Yes! A mummy! How cool is this? A mummy, a mummy. Wow! What's your name?"
"My name is Sahara. What's yours?"
"I'm Melina. Why are you wandering around the museum?"
"Well, I am King Tut's niece. I travel with his exhibit all around the world. I love to meet new people, make new friends, and explore! Do you want to explore with me?"
"You bet I do!"
And so they were off. Melina and Sahara slipped away from the tour group to begin their first adventure together.
Sahara took Melina to the basement of the museum to find Sahara's magic sarcophagus.
"All we have to do is climb in here, shut the lid, close our eyes, and chant the name of the place we want to go, and my magic sarcophagus will take us there. So think about the pyramids. Let's go there; I think it will be fun!" Sahara explained to an eager Melina.
"So cool!" Melina exclaimed.
The friends climbed in and started to chant. "The Pyramids of Giza, the Pyramids of Giza, the Pyramids of Giza."
All of a sudden, Melina felt the warm rays of sun. She felt sand below her feet and, when she opened her eyes, saw the Pyramids of Giza.
Melina was very excited. She had read about this place and seen pictures of the three pyramids that now towered before her. Three thousand years ago, the ancient Egyptians worked for many, many years to build the pyramids for their pharaohs. Some think it took more than twenty years and that at least twenty- five thousand people worked to build the pyramids.
Melina stood silent for a moment. Her mouth hung wide open, and her eyes stared keenly at the beauty and awesomeness of the pyramids. She recited the names of the pyramids from memory. "Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure."
"Melina, did you know that the pyramids were built to protect the pharaohs' bodies and their things after they passed away? Where I come from, Ancient Egypt, we believed that if we mummified our bodies—made them look just like me—we would live forever in the afterlife," Sahara explained. "Wanna go inside?"
"Can we?!" Melina was so excited.
"Sure, that way you can see all the cool hieroglyphics. That's how scientists know so much about my people. Let's go; we will use my sarcophagus to get inside quickly. Hop in."
Melina and Sahara both climbed in the sarcophagus, closed their eyes, and started to chant again.
"Inside Khufu, inside Khufu, inside Khufu."
