About the Author

Washington Irving was born on 3 April 1783 and died on 28th November 1859. He was a 19th century American author, biographer, essayist, diplomat and historian. He is best known for his 1819 short stories "Rip Van Winkle" and more famously "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" from 1820, both of which appear in his book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. Some of historical works include biographies of Oliver Goldsmith, George Washington and Muhammad, and wrote of several histories of 15th-century Spain and dealt with subjects such as Christopher Columbus, the Moors, and the Alhambra. Irving served as the U.S. ambassador to Spain between 1842 to 1846.
