About the Author

Jerry N. Smith, PhD, is curator of American and Western American art at Phoenix Art Museum, where he has introduced numerous works into the collection and overseen several exhibitions, including A Century of Retablos and Gustave Baumann: Artisan Printmaker of the Southwest. He was a contributing organizer and catalogue essayist for In Contemporary Rhythm: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenshein and Cézanne and American Modernism, writing on the influences of European modernism on artists working in the American West in the early twentieth century. In 2011, he organized The West Select, an annual exhibition and museum fundraiser of contemporary western art.
