The Photography for Teens series includes two introductory resources for teens interested in taking their photography beyond simple point and click. Volume 1, Setting Up the Shot, provides great examples for making attractive and interesting photographs. Volume 2, Taking the Shot, introduces readers to the mechanics of photography; including the variety of cameras available and lighting a shot. At some points technical, these books provide a step-by-step guide for capturing stunning photographs. There are plenty of example photographs to inspire teens, whether they are goofing around with friends or looking to capture memories while on vacation. Libraries looking to enhance their teen nonfiction collection or with a population of teens with a high interest in art or photography will appreciate these simple but helpful resources. Volume 2 of this three book series, "Photography for Teens," discusses the various types of cameras available today. The author then acquaints the reader with the parts of a camera, and the importance of lighting. He offers an introduction to some special modes found on digital cameras, and when tripods can be most useful. He talks about camera equipment such as various types of lenses, filters, and camera cases. Photographs are used to illustrate the author's point. He encourages the reader to experiment with the camera and offers ways to do so in a section called "Do It!" The author writes clearly and simply in this in short, three chapter introduction for young people who are just beginning to think about getting started in digital photography. It will be useful for students who learn better through photos and captions rather than a lengthy text. Kevin Jeffrey, a professional photographer, was the content consultant. A Glossary, an Index, Further Readings, a Bibliography, and Internet sites (located through FactHound) are included in the back. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo

Gr 5–10—Skog introduces the basic principles for creating and displaying pictures using digital cameras. Setting Up focuses on composition, backgrounds, and lighting levels. Taking discusses specialized equipment, such as tripods, lenses, and filters. Displaying considers editing, printing, and showcasing photos. Each book suggests activities that illustrate relevant principles. The instructions can be a little too general at times, e.g., "After cropping, check the image for clarity. Does it look fuzzy? If so, use the sharpening tool included in most photo-editing programs." The author assumes that readers have equipment and software and some knowledge of how to use them. All of the books are illustrated with good-quality photo examples of the ideas discussed. Although aimed at teens, the concepts covered could be understood and utilized by younger enthusiasts.
