This manual belongs on the professional shelf of every library--whether or not it has a young adult department or young adult librarian. It also should be available at every university offering a graduate degree in library science. It is the most basic, affordable guide on how to set up, expand, and/or improve library materials and services to teens. It includes chapters on the philosophy of young adult services and youth participation, on creating a space in libraries for young adults, on collection development, and on teen services that libraries should offer. The author discusses intellectual freedom, behavior issues and strategies, and continuing education for YA librarians. The many appendixes include the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Competencies for Libraries Serving Youth, tips on evaluating YA literature and Web sites, how to write and present a booktalk to groups, information literacy standards for student learning, a sample YA program evaluation, the Library Bill of Rights, and The Freedom to Read Statement. Vaillancourt, assistant director for the Missoula Public Library in Montana and long-time member of YALSA, has done an excellent job of balancing the philosophy of services to young adults with practical how-to suggestions. This is an excellent read for brand new teen librarians or experienced librarians switching to the young adult field. Experienced YA librarians also should reread this informative text occasionally to ensure that their program stays fresh and their focus is on target.
