CHAPTER 1

It was a cool fall day when Cowboy Chuck came into the barn. Following Cowboy Chuck was a Border Collie puppy. "Hello Bruce, Ben and Gerry. This is Shawn-Kay. She is going to be our guard dog here at the farm. Show her around the farm boys!" stated Cowboy Chuck. "Will do! C'mon little sister, I'll show you the place," Bruce said happily. "Okay that thounds great! Let'sth get going, my name is Thawn-Kay," said the cute puppy. "My name is Bruce and I am a powerful draft horse," exclaimed Bruce.

"A draft horse ... what'sth that? Thounds like thomething real important," said Shawn-Kay. " It is real important. I pull wagons and sleds for Cowboy Chuck and his wife," explained Bruce. "Wow, you must be thuper thmart," cried Shawn-Kay. Ben, Gerry, and Waverly approached the cute puppy. "Who is talking with some crazy language?" asked Ben. "Thounds like thomeone is misthing their s's," laughed Waverly. "What are you thaying? Thounds okay to me, what about you Bruce? Doesth it thound okay to you?" asked Shawn-Kay. "Sure it does kid," reassured Bruce.

Ben, Gerry and Waverly laughed at Shawn-Kay's answer. Bell and Fiona approached the barn. "What is so funny?" asked Bell. "Wait till you get a load of this new puppy. Her s's are th's, it is so funny!" exclaimed Waverly. Shawn-Kay looked confused. She didn't understand why everyone was laughing at her except Bruce. "Waverly, it is not nice to make fun of someone's speech," cautioned Bell. Now Shawn-Kay realized the horses were laughing at her. She ran away from the barn crying.

"Now look what you've done! You made Shawn-Kay cry!" yelled Bruce. "Sometimes you guys are so mean!" said Fiona. "Well, she needs to learn to take a joke," stated Wavely. Ben and Gerry saw Cowboy Chuck coming to the barn. "Time to quit talking and get ready to go to work," said Ben. Cowboy Chuck harnessed Ben and Gerry to the wagon. "Shawn-Kay let's go, get on the wagon," stated Cowboy Chuck. Cowboy Chuck looked all over the farm for the cute puppy.

Shawn-Kay was under the tree crying when Bruce, Bell and Utah approached. "Hey little sister, Cowboy Chuck is calling for you," said Bruce softly. "Why, tho he can laugh at me too?" cried Shawn-Kay. Utah nuzzled the little puppy and smiled at her. He knew what it was like to have your feelings hurt. Utah did not speak but Shawn-Kay knew what he meant. The sparkle in his eyes made her smile.

Bell, the wise old mare said, "Everyone is special and has unique abilities. You are a smart and strong Border Collie. You will be a great helper for Cowboy Chuck," Shawn-Kay looked up and smiled, "Thecial? Thart and throng? You really think I will be a good helper?" asked Shawn-Kay. "Well of course kid! Better get going, Cowboy Chuck is waiting," said Bruce.

Shawn-Kay scampered down the hill to Cowboy Chuck, waiting by the wagon. "There you are! It is time to go to work. Get in the wagon," said Cowboy Chuck. Cowboy Chuck commanded, "Step up boys!" Ben and Gerry began to pull the wagon. Shawn-Kay was feeling proud as she sat in the wagon. She knew she was special!
