That is, unless the Mormons get their way as they pour millions into California’s Proposition 8 to block gay marriage. Meanwhile, our Christian-Jewish couple attempts to buy a home for children they hope to adopt. Despite the collapse of the housing bubble and saving prodigiously, they find it is impossible to avoid overpaying for a home. Making matters worse are lenders who refuse to approve what every home now requires: a “short sale.” Benjamin’s brother, James, manager of a “start-up” mortgage outfit in Nevada, doesn’t have any of these compunctions as he borrows and leverages homes, boats, and cars. James’ wife puts up with his extravagance and immature ego, until the odds finally catch up with the Las Vegas housing market. James ends up divorced and wants what everyone else in Obama’s America wants. . . a “bailout” with money from people like Benjamin and Stephen.
