Under the project of planned publishing of key books, audio-visual and electronic publications during the Twelfth Five-year Plan, the book was edited under the leadership and supervision of Wang Jiayao, member of Chinese Academy of Engineering and a famous Chinese cartographer and expert on geographic information engineering. Gao Jun, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, wrote the preamble, while nearly 20 top scholars in cartography took part in the editorship of the book. The book describes the progress in over 60 years, gives detailed introduction to over 200 famous works and makes nearly 2000 references to major documents.
