About the Author

Hal Hinderliter is a consultant and journalist who has covered the print- ing industry for a number of trade publications, including Printing News, Graphic Arts Monthly, American Printer, the IPA Bulletin, Repro Report, Conversion, Artes Graficas and Dealer Communicator. A prolific author, Hal has published more than 120 magazine articles, six textbooks and hundreds of training programs.
In his former role as director of the Graphic Communication Institute (GrCI) at Cal Poly State University, Hal created training programs for both industry clients and public workshops. His responsibilities also included oversight of laboratory testing and research projects, as well as on-site workflow consultations.
Throughout the second half of the 1990s, Hinderliter was director of the Center for Imaging Excellence at the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation with responsibility for prepress and printing technology education. During this time, he authored the textbooks Understanding Digital Imposition (1998), Guide to Desktop Publishing, 3rd Edition (2000) and the GATF Desktop Publishing Primer (2004). Additional authoring cred- its include the GATF Imaging Skills Training Curriculum as well as two highly regarded surveys, the 1999 Survey of CTP User Satisfaction and the 2000 Survey on Digital Proofing.
Hal Hinderliter continues to serve the printing and publishing industries through his company Hal Hinderliter Consulting Services. With more than a decade of on-site problem-solving experience, his consultations help clients to increase profitability, improve quality and select new tech- nology related to graphic arts processes. Drawing on experience garnered from working in the printing industry since 1978, Hinderliter specializes in digital prepress, workflow management, variable data and digital pub- lishing and has performed technical consultations for Fortune 500 corporations, packaging and commercial printshops, publishers and reprographics companies.
