As part of "The Music Library" series, this book provides an introduction to the four traditional families of musical instruments—percussion, woodwinds, brass, and strings. A fifth, keyboards, provides an updated look at some of the newer instruments available today. In his descriptions of various instruments, the author takes the reader on a journey through time and across cultures. He makes a connection between each instrument and the various genres of music it can be used to play. For instance, we are led to envision a tenth-century gong, and then to imagine the value the Grateful Dead's drummer adds to the band's music. Although crafted as a reference book, this volume relies on vibrant language as well as provocative black-and-white art images and photographs. Given that the book begins with both a Foreword and an Introduction, it would have been nice to see a Conclusion included as well. Nonetheless, Notes, Further Reading, Works Consulted, an Index, and picture-credit pages provide plenty of fodder for any prospective student researcher. 2003, Lucent Books,

This title joins other "Music Library" series books that discuss jazz, rock and roll, classical music, and country music. They are well organized, easy to use, and interesting to read. Chapters are filled with interesting sidebars, photographs, and illustrations. The Instruments of Music is organized into five chapters: "Percussion," "Woodwinds," "Brass," "Strings," and "Keyboards." This title does not, however, only look at traditional orchestral instruments. Each chapter follows the development of instruments in its category. The chapter on percussion instruments begins with an examination of idiophones (percussion instruments that do not need tuning) dating back to 20,000 B.C. and then continues with bells, rattles, gongs, rainmakers, and a variety of drums. Instruments are looked at cross culturally, which lends use to social studies projects as well as music projects. For example, drums are not only seen as instruments but also as means of communication. The author states that in Africa there are almost as many drum languages as there are dialects of speech. Packed with interesting facts, these books are not simply about instruments or style. They also give a glimpse into the cultural significance and impact that music has around the world and over time.
