Maisie Hitchins helps an actress recover her emerald necklace and catch the thief in this second title in the “Mysteries of Maisie Hitchins” series. Maisie helps her grandmother care for her lodgers by cleaning up and serving their tea in Victorian London. Because she is also very good at solving mysteries, one of the lodgers, Miss Lane, an actress, enlists Maisie’s help for a another actress Lila Massey. Maisie has never been to a theater before and a whole new world opens up when she takes on the job of dresser for Miss Massey. Her real dresser has broken her leg and Miss Massey fears it happened as part of a curse on an emerald necklace given to her by sweetheart. The necklace has disappeared. As other things happen to Miss Massey, Maisie knows that a real person is the culprit and she must figure out who it is and where the necklace is. While doing this, she learns about the backstage life of the theater and even gets to participate on stage one night. In this early chapter book, illustrator Lindsay’s pen-and-ink drawings move the plot along beautifully, giving a clear representation of the characters and their activities. Seven to ten-year-olds will get drawn into the story which has action in every chapter to keep interest flowing. Learning about the backstage world of the theater is an added bonus. Readers will be working to solve the mystery with Maisie as the clues are revealed, feeling satisfaction as all is resolved by the very resourceful young detective and be looking forward to book three.
