A Boy's Own Mining Adventure
In the 1950's Brian decided to make a daring career move based on almost total ignorance of the facts. This was to work underground in one of the deepest coal-mines in Lancashire. Like a number of things in life, it seemed to be a good idea at the time. Sadly, he had failed to consider the implications of working in pitch darkness among folk who spoke a language unheard of in Knotty Ash and whose pet of choice was a thing called a Whippet.

What he did learn was that miners were keen to stay alive, loved beer, rugby, assorted lasses and considered dynamite to be a labour saving device.

Having spent some nine years underground he arrived, blinking in the light, to lecture other unfortunates in the art of mining engineering. He utterly refutes accusations that his leaving in any way hastened the demise of what was once a great British industry.

About the Author

Brian is tall for his age; he was born and brought up in Knotty Ash and worked in Liverpool for a large engineering company which has since disappeared. He then migrated to St Helens to work in the Lancashire coal-fields, which seemed a good idea at the time. Later on he became a lecturer in Mining Engineering before venturing even further north to Aberdeen. Having adjusted to the daylight, he worked offshore in various capacities throughout the seventies and early eighties, before being brought onshore to do other things. Now retired, he divides his time between consultancy work and remembering the past. He has been happily married for over 50 years to the same lady and a long time ago they produced a son and two daughters. He has yet to be recognised as ‘an international man of letters’, but in the meantime is determined to ignore the facts and live forever. He is the author of 4 books, each imaginatively entitled, ‘A Boy’s Own Offshore Adventure’, ‘A Boy’s Own Mining Adventure’, ‘A Boy’s Own ‘Oily’ Adventure’ and ‘A Boy’s Own Wartime Adventure’. He is currently working on a fifth saga which will probably have a similar title.
