Description: While this book provides an in-depth discussion of the physics behind different MR and CT techniques, a significant portion is dedicated to a discussion of different techniques for the evaluation of diseases in various organ systems.
Purpose: The authors have attempted to draw out more complex physics discussions in order to make the underlying principles clear to readers. They apply the techniques they discuss in the latter part of the book by describing clinical applications of these techniques in different disease states.
Audience: The authors identify their target audience as individuals who have an interest in understanding the physics principles of the various CT and MR perfusion techniques currently used in practice. However, their actual audience is likely much smaller, because the book is very detailed and has a high level discussion of physics. It is not appropriate for the physics novice, limiting the scope of readership. In addition, the book is very large. The authors are a combination of PhDs and radiologists, a diversity that provides a wealth of experience to draw on.
Features: The authors attempt to carve out detailed physics explanations from the main part of the book by placing them in "Geek Boxes." This is a valuable approach, but even with this separation, the text is dense and difficult to read. The most useful part of the book is the section on clinical applications of the techniques. Image quality is acceptable in this part of the book.
Assessment: This book provides a very detailed discussion of physics techniques that is well above the level of the average reader. It is well suited to individuals with a physics background who have an interest in learning about advanced CT and MR techniques.
