A Gurlz Dream
“A Gurlz Dream” is not only the title of this story, but is the name of a business started by two little girls. Amari and Autumn are two little elementary students who started their business, “ A Gurlz Dream.” Dr. Ledford’s touching experience with one of the little girls prompted her to write this convincing story outlining how young people can set rules and stick to them. Amari refused to break the rules of her company when she tried to sell one of her products to her School Nurse, Dr. Ledford. Regardless, of the fact that this person is someone she loves and respects, their business rule…”NO CASH, NO PRODUCT” would not be broken for her or anyone. Dr. Ledford argues that, unlike many adults in the business world, these little girls will have a lifelong business long after many businesses started by adults are folded. The message these young entrepreneurs have for the peers and all adults who aspire to have their own business is quite inspiring knowing that there so much to be learned from these two little girls.

About the Author

Dr. Doret Ledford shared the spotlight in "A Gurlz Dream" with her two little business motivators, Amari Johnson and Autumn Smart. These two little 9 and 10 year olds are students at an elementary school in Stone Mountain, Georgia and are the young entrepreneurs whose wisdom and business Savoir-fair gave Dr. Ledford the impetus to write this book. Amari and Autumn are two great motivators and plan to share their business knowledge with not only their peers but with all adults who are not intimated by the wealth of information these little people have to impart.

Dr. Doret Ledford who is the author of the book “Mental Health Facilities in the United States," was born in Manchester, Jamaica. She is the eighth child of Gladstone and Olga Wright and attended Manchester High School in Mandeville, and later St. Joseph’s Teachers’ College in the Country’s capital. She taught at the elementary and high school levels before migrating to New York, U.S.A. After working on Wall Street for several years, Dr. Ledford realized that her calling in life was really to make a difference in the lives of children, and in 1994, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia to continue in that capacity. She attended Georgia Perimeter College Nursing School so she could have an idea of the medical profession and what it entailed before advancing on her aspiration of getting her doctorate in Public health. She attended Devry University where she received an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and Health Information Management. She received her Master of Public Health and Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health from Walden University, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Ledford has been an elementary School Nurse for the past 13 years, and her mission is to be part of the fight on Childhood Obesity. Her present project is: “HELP ME TO FIGHT CHILDHOOD OBESITY ONE SCHOOL AT A TIME,” but plans to write more health articles and children’s books which she hopes will benefit both children and adults. She resides with her children, Roianne and Robert in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
