Description: This book is intended to educate parents and families about prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.
Purpose: It will be a significant help in providing information to parents on the issues related to obesity. This is a certainly a worthy objective since obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S. The authors definitely meet their objective.
Audience: The audience includes parents and families who have young children who are obese or may be at risk for obesity because of genetics or family obesity.
Features: The book is very nicely formatted as a practical guide. The introduction is a worksheet for parents to take to the pediatrician. The author details the problems of obesity in terms that parents can understand and then presents chapters on nutrition, physical activities, and the parental role in establishing good healthy eating habits for children. The book then goes through specific ages beginning with the newborn through adolescence, discussing the specific issues related to each age group.
Assessment: This is an excellent manual for parents and families as well as pediatricians and primary care providers. It provides a comprehensive review of obesity and is an excellent practical companion to the book, Pediatric Obesity: Prevention, Intervention, and Treatment Strategies for Primary Care, by the same author (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2007).
