With glossy pages and comic book format kids can learn about the work of the police. A school group is shown around the police station by Officer Cortez, who is a woman. The group sees the front desk, interview room, briefing room, exercise room, locker room, and dispatch center. They go to the "sally port" where suspects are brought into the station. They see a squad car with radio, camera, and computer. In the booking area suspects are photographed and fingerprinted. The cells have only a bed, sink, and toilet. At the end of the visit Officer Cortez tells them to dial 911 in an emergency, says that police officers are their friends, and hands out badges with 911 on them. There is a glossary, list of other books to read, an Internet site, and an index. This is part of the "First Graphics, My Community" series. In spite of the smiling Officer Cortez this book has the feeling of a cautionary tale. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
