Oceans and sea life are featured in this beautifully illustrated introduction to the oceans of the world. There are paintings of the Southern, Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, and Indian Oceans along with tropical and subtropical oceans that include the wildlife native to each ocean. Each page has one informative sentence and a label of the name of the ocean and the animal. An illustration of a world map shows the oceans that are represented in this nonfiction text. Stingrays, sharks, dolphins, whales, clams, lobsters, and turtles are some of the animals that are identified with the various oceans. Facts about the oceans explain what an ocean is, how the oceans are joined together, and how the bottom of the ocean is called the ocean floor. Some plants, such as kelp and seaweed, are also shown. Contrasts are made between how sea animals move in different ways and how some stay in one place. Brief sentences tell how some ocean animals eat meat, and others eat plants. An afterword contains paragraphs with additional information about each page. This afterword would be useful for adults to further explain and provide more details when they are reading with young children. A glossary and bibliography are included in this "About Habitats" series. The text is a very good basic source for science education and interesting reading with visual pleasure.
