Each page offers a glimpse at one of eighteen different penguin species. We see the Adelie, Emperor and Gentoo Penguins against a backdrop of ice. In contrast, the Yellow-eyed Penguin appears in a forest. A Galapagos Penguin poses on a rocky shore beside a Marine Iguana. Sill devotes several pages to the impressive variety of nests penguins build. The Chinstrap sits on a nest of rocks, while the Magellanic burrows into a dirt hole. The Humboldt prefers to use a cave as a nest, and the King Penguin balances a chick on its feet. The afterword offers more sophisticated readers and listeners a chance to learn additional facts in extended paragraphs about each of the eighteen illustrations, along with a glossary of terms and bibliography. The wonderfully diverse and playful watercolors in this picture book, teamed with text on two levels, make it an excellent choice for children with an interest in the natural world.
