Purpose: Tactical advice for readers considering or beginning in academics is provided.
Audience: Residents and junior faculty are an appropriate audience for this work. The author is a senior family medicine physician practicing in a traditional academic environment in Oregon.
Features: The book covers the thought process in identifying the desire for an academic career and expectations along this line of work. The reader is then guided in finding that job, academic advancement, administrative requirements and planning through the stages, including getting started, climbing the ladder, the highly productive and administrative years followed by retirement. Tables include websites providing pertinent information. Each chapter also includes a bibliography, which combines books, papers from classic medical journals, contemporary lay publications, and websites. Material in reference lists dates to within one year of publication. The table of contents lists chapters and components of the appendix. A list of approximately 20 "contributors" coming from various geographic localities, specialties, academic settings, gender and age groups are also acknowledged to open the book. The exact role of these individuals in the creation of this work is unclear, although I suspect they have served as resources for the author during writing.
Assessment: This book contains many messages I wish I had heard in the early years of my academic practice. Lessons described also cross disciplines, though the importance of each varies by institution and specialty. This is a quick and valuable read which can be used by the mentor and the advisee.
