Overview

Since the 1992 publication of the third edition of Administering the School Library Media Center, schools and school libraries have changed significantly. AASL's publication of Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning, with its emphasis on the collaborative teaching role of school media specialists, the increasing importance of information literacy, the proliferation of new technologies, and the introduction of the Internet have all had a significant impact on the administration of school library media centers. This new edition encompasses all of these innovations as it covers the basics of administration, facilities management, selection of materials, staffing, budgeting, organization, and the like. There is much that is all new: all chapters have been reviewed and updated and the text has been carefully reviewed to bring it in line with school libraries of the 21st century. It is aligned with the new AASL national guidelines for school library media.

About the Author

BETTY J. MORRIS teaches media specialists in the Media and Instructional Technology Department of the College of Education at the State University of West Georgia. Her experience includes working as a media specialist, as a faculty member teaching media specialists at Long Island University, as a Library Power Director in Florida, and as an acquisitions editor for two publishing companies.

This updated volume should be at close hand in all of our offices. Covering virtually any topic or event addressed by the school library media teacher/director, Morris begins with history, moves quickly into forging partnerships, and then gets down to the nuts and bolts of library administration. Updated material since 2000 is extensive, addressing the concerns of the updated ALA Information Power Guidelines, State Standards and NCLB, as well as new products, processes, and programs needed for operating a school library in the 21st century. Wonderful rubrics, templates, and matrices abound that will assist all of us in more effectively utilizing and assessing our knowledge and job performance. The book contains nuggets we can all use in our individual district or site policies and manuals, including a rubric for weeding that is one of the clearest and most useful around. New librarians might find Blanche Woolls's outstanding The School Library Media Manager (Libraries Unlimited, 2004) less overwhelming, but Morris's volume is chock-full of useful applications in the real world of politics, personnel, and procedure.-Mary R.
