It is impossible to understand American history without taking a look at the contributions, suffering, and heritage of African-Americans. All too often the life of African-Americans over the years has been ignored or relegated to a mere footnote. In African Americans in the Military readers are provided a well written and thoughtful look at the roles played by black men and women in the nation's armed services. In telling this story author Lusted does an excellent job of capturing critical events and developments in many of the nation's wars. Starting with the Revolution and carrying on to the contemporary conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, Lusted takes the time necessary to highlight individual contributions and collective evolutions in this field. Reader will come to understand that African-Americans have played a vital role in all of America's wars often with little return in terms of civil liberties once peace was concluded. Of particular interest are the lesser known conflicts such as the Indian Wars where all-black units of "Buffalo Soldiers" served so bravely in the most difficult circumstances. As part of the broader illustrated "Major Black Contributions from Emancipation to Civil Rights" series, this particular volume offers its readers an accurate look at one important piece of the history of African-American men and women who served and died for a country they saw as home even when those they defended did not recognize them as equals.
