The basic facts about Air Force One are presented in a small book format. Air Force One is a unique airplane designed and built especially for the President of the United States. The President has an office complete with a desk, a computer, a telephone and more. The presidential suite includes a bedroom, a bathroom, and a gym. There is a large meeting room and a large dining room. The plane also has additional bedrooms, two kitchens and six bathrooms. Members of the press travel in a designated area in the back of the plane. When the President is not flying, the airplane is kept in a special hanger where guards protect it at all times. A two-page Timeline shows significant dates, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt flying to another country in 1943, the name Air Force One being used for the first time in 1953, and President Eisenhower as the first president to use a jet in 1959. High quality photographs aid in understanding the text. Includes a table of contents, a glossary, an index, and a suggested website. A good source of information for young researchers, this is part of the “Rookie Read-About American Symbols” series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.; Ages 6 to 8.
