This lively graphic history of the events leading up to Texas’s statehood is told by “all stars” Stephen Austin, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett and Vicente Guerrero and by the late Nathan Hale. Hale and Guerrero comment on what’s going on throughout the book and the others ask questions and sometimes act as slightly off-topic comic cheerleaders. Moses Austin had negotiated a land grant with the Mexican government, allowing three hundred families to settle in Texas; his son, Stephen, led the group and tried to keep peace with the Mexican government. The book focuses on the years 1830 through 1836, years of conflict between the Mexican government and the Texans, or United States immigrants to Mexico. The conflict ended when Sam Houston’s victory at the Battle of San Jacinto made Texas independent of Mexico. Houston became the provisional president of Texas. In 1845, Texas became the twenty-eighth U.S. state. A list of books for further information follows the text. Sam Houston's ultimate victory over Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto. Complete with maps, this title is far more effective in telling the complete history than a straightforward state history book.
