Did Alexander the Great live up to his name during his short and embattled life? Alexander and his parents were told he was descended from the gods and certainly believed he was destined for a life of power. As a child, Alexander studied with Aristotle and showed great self-confidence and physical prowess. After becoming a king at twenty years old, he would go on to conquer and rule lands from Greece to Egypt to India. One of the revised editions in the “A Wicked History” series, this title is a well-written, interesting overview of Alexander’s achievements and failures. It begins with a world map of Alexander’s empire showing routes of destruction and key events and places, and a web of Alexander’s family, friends, and enemies. Colored and detailed photographs of historical figures, drawings, and paintings depict Alexander’s court and chaotic war scenes. Three sections, of five to seven chapters each, take readers through the different stages of Alexander’s life. Each part begins with questions for readers to consider as they progress through the chapters. Back matter includes excerpts of writings from ancient historians that recreate what Alexander’s actions and words might have been. Supplemental project ideas extend the learning and make use of social media, though some of the ideas allow for deeper analysis than others. Also helpful are profiles of historical figures mentioned, a timeline of Alexander’s life, and a glossary of the terms that appear in the book. Finally, a list of books with more information about Alexander, with brief descriptions of each book, is incorporated. Reviewer: Ann L. Kreske; Ages 12 up.
