This book follows the format of others in the "Countries Around the World" series. There are a few pages of each topic covered: introduction, history, regions and resources, wildlife, infrastructure, culture, today, and short call-outs and sidebars that cover interesting material. Unfortunately, it includes some information which may confuse students or lead them in the wrong direction. For example, Algeria's government is praised on page for being a leader for peace in North Africa without any details. Then the next section discusses the struggle for independence and the high degree of civil unrest and dissatisfaction with the government over fifty years. The text offers no advice on how to put these contradictory ideas together until much later. The sentence "The fennec fox's large ears allow it to hear prey from far away" seems to ignore the desert research on animal adaptation. All foxes can sense their prey through hearing, but the desert foxes, including the fennec, have larger ears than the temperate climate foxes because the larger flesh surface of the ears brings the blood stream closer to the surface and dissipates high body heat. The Arabic word for "bread" is generally written as khubz or khobz, not khabz and other translated words do not match those recommended by students of Arabic, e.g. sakr rather than ajdal for falcon, bahar rather than bakhr for sea. The countries of Africa and the Middle East are less familiar to American students and their families than those of Europe. Particular attention should be paid to fact-checking and helping students understand the country in the context of its history and its contemporary issues.
