This energetically rhymed picture book moves words along with swiftness and humor. The text is all about song, rather than story: each two (sometimes four) page spread sings with six spirited descriptions characterizing cats, and ending with the refrain, "All around cats!" For example, "Mouse snatchers, fish catchers, day nappers, night trappers, people pleasers, puppy teasers, ALL AROUND CATS!" Language like this lends itself to many forms of illustration; there would seem to be rich possibilities for detail in sequences like, "Swing gliders, ledge hiders, alley prowlers, roof howlers . . . " Which is why the illustrations the text has been matched with—bold, humorous cartoon strokes, which are fun and often ingenious in and of themselves—nevertheless seem somehow out of sync in this pairing. 2004, NorthWord Press, Ages 4 to 7.
