About the Author

My children have inspired and encouraged me to attempt to tell my life story, not because I am unique from the millions of other Americans, but for the reason I have for many years described my “average life” experiences. I was born in a small town in the heart of Wisconsin only to be virtually abandoned by my mother. Much of my childhood includes growing as the son of a policeman, going to numerous schools, spending time on my grandfather’s dairy farm, hunting, fishing, and learning to work. A burned-out attempt at college life and eight years in the Navy lead to a family. The subsequent losses of family members have had a profound effect on my life and influenced many decisions. The 90s were particularly difficult years for my wife, Nancy and myself. Twenty-eight changes of address and numerous jobs during my lifetime has taken a toll on us. My spouse of fifty-three years has been my loving partner since my Navy days, continuing now with our so-called retirement. She has been a most valued advisor on this project. I thank her for her patience with me. My family story includes my great-grandfather, Gustave Giese, who was born in Schwendt, Germany in 1864. He died in 1958. He was a homesteader in central Wisconsin. My grandmother, Anna Giese, married William Julius Bonow, born 1896 and died 1964. My father, Frederick Erwin Bonow, grew up with his brothers, Gus and Billy, and with sisters, Rose and Pauline. My biological mother, Millicent Marie Shelvan, was married to my father on October 25, 1941. Her father, Robert, died in a railroad accident at the paper mill and I never knew him. My stepmother, Betty Jean Rogers, was born September 4, 1926 to Frank Rogers and Euphamie Sylvia Mitchell. I did not know Frank, but I came to know Euphamie as Grandma Twist since she had married Leslie Twist. They had a son, my Uncle Richard Twist born in 1929. My brother, Mike, and sisters, Pam and Evonne, were born to Betty and Fred. My love, Nancy Lee Traske, was born to Loretta and Vincent. Her brothers include Tom, Gerald, and Robert. Our children are Kelly Lana, Barbara Lynn, Kris Lori, and Brian Thomas. We have eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. May God Bless each and every one of them for their contributions to my life.
