An Irish Druid Down Under: A Biography of James J Brenan
James Joseph Brenan was a young boy of fourteen when he arrived in Australia, having left his father and his home in Dublin Ireland to travel to his new home with his mother and four siblings. An Irish Druid Down Under tells the story of the extraordinary contribution that James made during his life 'down under', particularly in his work with the Melbourne City Council as councillor and Alderman, and as a member of the United Ancient Order of Druids (UAOD) for over thirty years. Brother J J Brenan made a significant contribution to the Order of Druids, as Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Victoria for thirty years, and as Supreme Arch Druid of the Supreme Grand Lodge of Australia and New Zealand from 1912 until his death in 1914. He was very much involved in the organization of the Druids' Galas that raised funding for many of the Victorian Hospitals and other charites. As Alderman, James also made a significant contribution, serving on each of the council committees throughout his years there, and being responsible through his role with the Public Works Committee for the introduction into Melbourne of such new and exciting facilities as children's playgrounds, swings and slides. Married to Annie Livingston Brenan, James was the father of twelve children. An Irish Druid Down Under shares James's many personal and professional achievements during his seventy years of life, from his arrival in Australia until his death in 1914.
