Description: Three internationally recognized expert anatomists have produced 10 definitive chapters on equine anatomy. The first nine chapters cover the fore and hind limb, head, central nervous system, axial skeleton and neck, thorax, abdomen, and urogenital regions. The last chapter covers clinically applied anatomy using multiple forms of clinical imaging such as ultrasound, endoscopy, and radiography.
Purpose: The book is intended "to show the structure of the body by illustrations that are true to nature accompanied by accompanying text." The authors' intention is to "do this in such a way that practical matters are emphasized and irrelevant clinical and functional details are only mentioned." The most clearly expressed purpose of this updated edition is to allow "the contributions to clinical-functional anatomy [in the last chapter to be] intensively revised and most extensively completed." As this is the best chapter of the book, going well beyond the normal anatomical text, the authors have more than met their goals.
Audience: The audience is never expressly described, but any student of equine anatomy and any equine practitioner or animal scientist will find it to be an excellent addition to the literature.
Features: The main part of the book is a useful and well-illustrated multichapter atlas of equine anatomy in the traditional sense. The last part is a brilliantly illustrated section on clinically applied anatomy that includes cross-sectional anatomy illustrations along with ultrasound images of limbs, a critical combination in understanding ultrasonographic anatomy. It also includes microscopic anatomy illustrations, numerous ophthalmic and endoscopic photographs, and reproductive ultrasounds so common in practice today. This book is not intended as, and should not be considered to be, a guide to dissection.
Assessment: This is an excellent atlas that should be a mainstay in the library of any serious equine student. The last chapter on clinically applied anatomy alone is worth the moderate-to-high price. The last chapter represents equine anatomy being taught in the only practicable manner in the 21st century, using cross-sectional and other creative practical illustrations critical for the proper understanding of modern veterinary practice, which relies so much on multiple methods of clinical imaging.
