Description: These flash cards are a unique didactic tool for preparation for the anesthesiology oral board examination.
Purpose: Success on the anesthesiology oral board examination as well as in clinical practice is based on an extensive knowledge base and the ability to apply this knowledge. The goal of the authors of the flash cards is to synthesize the essential information in a way that encourages critical thinking and helps in cultivating a systematic approach to the management of anesthesia in the hypothetical scenarios on the examination and in the reality of everyday practice. Using these cards provides a framework that many trainees will find helpful.
Audience: The flash cards are intended for trainees and practitioners preparing for practice examinations and for the anesthesiology oral board as part of their certification. The cards also have utility as a tool for development of critical thinking and the ability to consolidate theoretical knowledge with practical performance.
Features: The principles behind these flash cards are to rapidly review essential information and develop a framework of clinical thinking that synthesizes the theoretical knowledge and guides its clinical application. The cards are accompanied by a booklet that explains the concept of the cards and provides guidance in the methods of their use. The flash cards present a single card per topic and they are divided into three sections, each color-coded - disease states, procedures, and events. The disease states section covers an expansive list of disorders that raise unique issues in the perioperative period and are distinctly relevant for anesthesiologists. The second section highlights specific concerns associated with various surgical procedures. The third section addresses the management of particular events encountered in the practice of anesthesia. All the flash cards in the first two sections contain the same panels, organized in four quadrants that are numbered in the instruction booklet to indicate the order in which they are to be read. Panel 1 features a list of general considerations characteristic for each disease or procedure, panel 2 addresses the relevant preoperative evaluation and preparation, panel 3 emphasizes the unique concerns in the construction of the anesthetic plan, and panel 4 reviews anesthetic management and underscores distinctive issues. The backs of the cards contain one or more references and some have clinical pearls. The cards in the third section present text in bulleted format, divided into sections. The predictable limitations of this format are the resultant emphasis on high-yield facts and scarcity of illustrations. The clinical pearls are helpful, and the space on the back of the cards could be used to expand upon the background knowledge and enhance the didactic quality with a few well-planned, essential illustrations.
Assessment: These flash cards represent a distinctive teaching approach to the preparation for examinations that will greatly benefit trainees and practitioners of anesthesia.
