About the Author

Glen Cook used to work the assembly line at a General Motors plant, writing in between helping to build cars as they came down the conveyor belt. He has written extensively in the science fiction and fantasy fields, and is the author of the Garrett, P.I., novels and the Black Company alternate history series.

In a world with no apparent technology and magicians in positions of power, Garrett tries to stay abreast of what goes on. He has working associates, including Playmate; the bird, Goddam Parrot; and the Dead Man, with whom he communicates telepathically and from whom he learns the thoughts of others. Garrett is asked to bodyguard a young boy who has an inventor's genius and strange acquaintances who seem to be elves—some whom he thinks are friends and some who are after the others. There are many odd characters in TunFaire, and Garrett knows them all—good, bad, powerful, and weak, including the authorities. Garrett is a reckless ladies' man, and the women in his life are all bombshells, some quite influential. His newest female companion is a ratwoman—not human but with ambitions and clearly sharper than most people. Garrett narrates with twists and turns that amaze and amuse, in between beers, magic, fights, unconsciousness (resulting from all of the previous) and unexpected appearances and disappearances. Naturally, the right things get done for most characters and problems are resolved.
